Foreword by Vice Chairman
I am the founding chairman of the Hong Kong Institution of Textile and Apparel (HKITA) and have continued to serve in the Executive Committee ot the Institution ever since its inception of 10th August 1993. The main mission of HKITA is to assist the textile and clothing enterprises in Hong Kong to promote, upgrade and maintain professional standards and practices through dissemination of information, professional examination, training courses, seminars, conferences, industrial research, publications and related activities.

The Executive Committee of HKITA consists of 17 members who are responsible for all the activities of the Institution. There arefour sub-committees overseeing the administrative functions of Membership, Education and Training, Publication, and Social Affairs and Public Relation. At present, HKITA has a total of 330 members, comprising of 3 Honorary Fellow members, 5 Fellow members, 121 members, 41 Licentiate members, 22 Graduate members, 58 Affiliate members, 2 Companion members, and 78 Student members.

The HKITA has been working closely with other professional and training bodies such as China Textile Engineering Society, Society of Dyers and Colorists (HK), Textile Institute (HK), Vocational Training Council, and Clothing Industry Training Authority. In addition, it maintains good working relationships withmost of the leading business organizations.

The HKITA hosted a number of activities for our members as well as professionals and people engaging in the industry. For instance, a joint conference with the China Textile Engineering Society was held in April 1998 in Beijing focusing on the main theme of research and development in the Mainland China and the Hong KOng SAR. The conference was well attended by more than 80 delegates.

On 27th September 1997, the Provisional Legislative Council approved that all voting members (including Honorary Fellow and Member) of HKITA would have the voting right in the election of representative of the Textile and Garment constituency of the Legislative Council of the SAR. This reflects that the Government has recognized the importance of our Institution and the professional status of its members.

In the future, we will strive to provide even better sercices to our members. At the same time, we seek further support from you and those who are affiliated in the very important industry of the Hong Kong SAR.

-- Professor Yeung Kwok Wing, Vice Chairman
